Manaslu Circuit Upper Route - 17 Days

While the standard Manaslu Circuit Trek has grown popular overtime, the Manaslu Circuit Upper Route Trek is a quieter and more culturally immersive way to experience one of Nepal’s most remarkable trekking regions. Unlike the standard route, this Manaslu Circuit alternative route follows lesser-used and more remote Upper Manaslu village trails, allowing trekkers to experience the region as it existed long before trekking routes became established. Instead of Macchhe Khola, the Upper Route trek begins at Baseri and passes traditional villages like Kasi Gaun, Keruja, Doban, Philim village, Lho village, the famous village Samagaun, and Samdo.
By avoiding the commonly used Macchhekhola starting point, the upper route introduces trekkers to a quieter, more authentic side of the region. This trek unfolds gradually through farming communities, forested valleys, and remote mountain settlements. These settlements are connected by local footpaths that are still part of everyday village life which means you will get immersive cultural experiences starting from Hindu influenced villages which gradually transition to Gurung and Tibetan settlements.
The upper route eventually joins the main Manaslu Circuit at Jagat, after which the trek follows the classic trail toward high Himalayan terrain and the dramatic crossing of Larkya La Pass.

The Manaslu Upper Route trek is alluring in a way that it takes you to the Manaslu Base Camp as an acclimatization hike, after which you cross the challenging Larkya La Pass at 5,106 meters. With roads pushing into the standard Manaslu Circuit Trek and trekker’s crowd increasing here too, the Upper Route is the way to still have a traditional experience despite this modernization. On the trail, you will cross picturesque villages, stupas, prayer wheels, and suspension bridges. Mountains and spectacular mountain views are a major part of the Manaslu Upper Route Trek.
Stunning views of mountains like Manaslu (8,163 m), Annapurna II (7,937 m), Shringi Himal (7,155 m), Simnang Himal (6,251 m), Naike Peak (6,211 m), Samdo Peak (5,117 m), waterfalls, and glacial lakes make this journey even more picturesque.
The Manaslu Upper Route trek offers a rare glimpse into a Nepal that remains largely untouched by the wheels of progress. You will travel from sub-tropical forests to alpine zones, enjoying varying landscapes, climates, and vegetation. The upper route is ideal for people who want to delve deep into the traditions of the Manaslu Region while following a slower trekking rhythm. With fewer trekkers, gradual elevation gain, and a strong sense of progression, the Manaslu Circuit Upper Route stands out as one of the most rewarding off-the-beaten-path trekking routes in Nepal.
Route Clarity

Many trekkers tend to confuse the Manaslu Upper Route Trek with the standard Manaslu Circuit Trek. While you will indeed be exploring the Manaslu region, this trek is a less-traveled alternative entry into the Manaslu region. The purpose of this alternative Manaslu Upper route is to reclaim the serenity lost to road construction in the lower Budhi Gandaki gorge. You will entirely bypass Macchhekhola which is the starting point of the Manaslu Circuit Trek, which now involves sharing the trail with jeeps and dust.
In the Manaslu Upper Route Trek, you get 3 days of pristine remoteness before joining the standard trail at Jagat. Starting from Baseri, it passes through villages like Kashigaun, Kerauja, and Runchet, giving you a quiet and remote experience.
The route joins the standard Manaslu Circuit at Jagat, after which the trail follows the classic Manaslu Circuit Trek route. Due to extra villages and detours, this route takes longer than the standard Manaslu Circuit.
Manaslu Upper Route VS Standard Manaslu Circuit:
While most of the routes of the Manaslu Upper Route Trek and the standard Manaslu Circuit Trek are the same after the first four days, the trekking experience becomes significantly different. To begin with, your experience will be into more off-the-beaten path in Manaslu region as the Manaslu Upper Route trek uses local village paths instead of established trekking highways. You will witness more of life in the remote Himalayas.
Also, the Manaslu Upper Route Trek emphasizes cultural immersion over speed. The number of trekkers on the upper route is significantly less than the standard Manaslu Circuit. This reduces the crowd and gives you much more to explore in terms of culture. You will also get deeper insights into village life and regional traditions. It adds 2 to 3 days to the total duration, making it a slow and authentic trekking experience in Nepal rather than a checkbox trek.
Cultural and Local Focus
As compared to the standard Manaslu Circuit Trek, the Manaslu Upper Route Trek features a deeper cultural integration. Daily life in the Manaslu Upper Route Trek features farming, animal husbandry, yak pastures, and seasonal rhythms. Seasonal honey hunting is also a common sight on the Upper Manaslu Route. Rather than industrial teahouses in Manaslu Circuit Trek made for accommodating the trekkers, homes are built from stone and wood to dry agricultural products and provide a communal space for neighbors.
The villages feature a high cultural influence and are shaped by generations of adaptation to mountain life. Monasteries, prayer flags, mani walls, and chortens appear naturally all along the trail. The transition from Hindu influences in the lower hills to a more Tsum style influences of Tibetan Buddhism is also quite evident reflecting a lived spiritual culture rather than curated experiences.
Geography and Trekking Flow
In terms of geography and trekking flow, the Manaslu Upper Route trek is a masterclass as you cross landscapes across different climatic zones throughout the 17-day trek. You begin in the Sub-tropical Zone surrounded by lush, humid weather and waterfalls and move through the Temperate Zone which features lush oak and rhododendron forests before hitting the Alpine Zone which lies above the tree line. From mid-hill farmland and forests to narrow river gorges and high alpine valleys near Manaslu, this trek features it all and gives you an experience of a lifetime in a single trek.
This gradual but evident transition helps you for better acclimatization before you reach the core Manaslu region, and it prepares you for the thin air of the mighty Larkya La Pass at 5,106 meters.
Permits and Regulations
Every trek in Nepal requires certain permits without which you can’t go ahead in the trek as every trail features checkpoints at specific distance. These permits are meant for your safety and to protect the sensitive trekking environment. For Manaslu Upper Route Trek, the permits are the same as the standard Manaslu Circuit Trek.
The permits required include:
- Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP)
- Restricted Area Permit (RAP)
- Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)
- Trekker’s Information Management System (TIMS)
You cannot avail these permits on your own as a solo trekker and being aligned with a registered trekking agency is mandatory as solo trekking is not allowed in Nepal as of 2026. With a trusted local agency like Beyond the Limits Treks and Expedition, you are in safe hands as you will get a local and trained guide to accompany you on the trek to ensure your comfort and safety. We will handle all your permits and paperwork too.
How Difficult is the Manaslu Upper Route Trek?
The Manaslu Circuit Upper Route trek is considered a moderately challenging high-altitude trek. While the trek doesn’t require any technical skills, the long duration of the trek is what makes it challenging for the trekkers. Over a span of 17 days, you will be going from an altitude of 1,400 meters at Kathmandu to 5,106 meters at Larkya La Pass, which is a major altitude difference to cover.
Also, the days will include around 5 to 7 hours of walking every day on average, which tends to take a physical toll on many trekkers. And this won’t be on smooth trails as the terrain can be quite uneven and rocky, including forest trails and narrow valley trails.
The trek is also longer than the standard Manaslu Circuit, which increases overall endurance requirements, both physical and mental. Despite acclimatization, altitude sickness is a real concern on this trek, so you need to be careful.
Weather conditions are heavily unpredictable and can change within a matter of minutes. Teahouse facilities, especially on the upper route and high-altitude areas are quite basic, so you might need to adjust without some amenities in certain locations.
For preparation, you need to start with a proper workout routine at least 3 to 6 months before the trek. Include a good amount of cardio like walking, running, cycling, and even swimming in your routine to prepare your heart and lungs for the trek. Other than that, strength training can help you train your muscles like calves, core, and legs for the long hours of walking with your backpack on the trek. Climbing up and down the stairs can also be good for your training and building stamina.
If possible, you can go for short hikes nearby to get accustomed to walking for a few hours. Besides that, include mental exercises like meditation and breathing exercises to maintain resilience throughout the trek.

Today, your journey officially begins with an early morning scenic drive through Nepal’s hills, river valleys, and rural towns. While most of the roads are well made, you might encounter some bumps. As the road narrows, landscapes become more remote, and scenic views of waterfalls, rivers, hills, terraces, and mountains enter the picture. After around 8 to 9 hours of driving alongside the Budhi Gandaki River, we will eventually reach Baseri.
This is a quiet village that marks the starting point of the upper route. This lesser-known trailhead immediately sets the tone for a different kind of Manaslu experience.
Today is the first day of trekking. From Baseri, you will follow village paths and take an uphill route. After crossing the terraced farmlands, the path will gradually ascend to Manbu as you cross the Chhote Khola river. You will stop for lunch at Dhorat, and keep walking alongside traditional homes and cultivated fields to reach Kashigaun. This is your beginning of the Upper Circuit route as this route is not part of the standard Manaslu Circuit Trek.
You will also get your first close up glimpses of Ganesh Himal today. In Kashigaun, you will instantly get a remote Manaslu trekking experience as daily routines revolve around farming and livestock. This will be your resting stop for the day.
Today, you will be continuing along the quiet, undisturbed trails linking small settlements as you head towards Runchet from Kashigaun via Kerauja. The trail is beautiful and peaceful.
You will pass stone houses, water mills, and grazing fields. The trail also weaves its way through waterfalls and lush rhododendron forests. The trek is slow paced, which allows you to explore and observe more of the local lifestyle. After a few hours of trekking, you will reach Runchet which is an ancient settlement famous for its traditional Mane Dance and its deep connection to the Bon religion. This will be your resting spot for the day.
On this day, we descend towards the Budhi Gandaki Gorge to join the standard Manaslu Circuit Trek at Jagat. Following rugged hillsides and forested hills, the trail gradually descends and contours along river valleys before reaching Jagat. As you near Jagat, you will see a noticeable shift in the trekking atmosphere as the number of trekkers significantly increases and the teahouse infrastructure improves as well.
Jagat serves as the entry point into the Manaslu Conservation Area and here lies the first checkpoint of this restricted area where your permits are checked. This is your resting spot for the day.
From Jagat, you join the Manaslu Circuit Trek route. The trail enters a narrow gorge where you will cross many swaying suspension bridges and climb many stone staircases. As you make your way through the lush bamboo forests, the cultural influences noticeably shift along with flora and fauna. You will see langur monkeys swinging in the background of mani walls, chortens, and prayer wheels.
After crossing villages like Ekle Bhatti, Thangurmu, and Lokpa, you will reach Deng which is a part of the Nubri valley in the upper Manaslu region. You will stay at a teahouse in Deng overnight.
Time to go higher into the Manaslu region. On this day, you will start by crossing a bridge and ascend through pine, rhododendron, and fir forests. The landscape turns more alpine as you go higher. You will cross compact villages like Rana, Bhi Phedi, and Bihi where stone houses and carved wooden windows are a common sight. Diverse landscapes come into view throughout the way. From Bihi, you will descend and cross a small bridge over Serang Khola. Further, trek past fields of maize and wheat and after a small hike, you will reach Namrung village.
This village is your resting spot for the day. You can relax at your teahouse with the first clear views of Mt. Manaslu from Namrung.
From Namrung, you begin ascending towards Lho with stunning Himalayan views and Tibetan culture strongly dominating the cultural landscape. Fluttering prayer flags and monasteries dot the region. The trail continues through lush alpine forests to reach Lihi village. Here onwards, be careful as you will be crossing some landslide prone areas to reach the Sho village. The trail continues to Lho with views of Himchuli and Simnang Himal. After a couple of hours of trekking, you will reach Lho which is your resting spot for the day.
This is a shorter day meant for gradual acclimatization. Lho is home to the ancient Ribung monastery, and you will also see stunning views of Mt. Manaslu rising above the village from here.
On this day, we take the high trail towards Pungyen Gompa at 4,800 meters which is another ancient monastery located at the foot of the Manaslu Glacier. This detour is important for acclimatization and allows you to explore a major highlight of the Manaslu region.
After exploring Pungyen Gompa, you will descend towards Shyala and then get on a steep uphill terrain towards Samagaon which is the most important village in Manaslu region as it is an acclimatization stop. Your day ends here.
This day is an acclimatization day, and it is an important day for your trek. Don’t think of it as just a rest day. Today, you will be going for acclimatization hikes near Samagaon. The best acclimatization hike here is the hike to the Manaslu Base Camp at 4,800 meters. On the way, you will also be exploring the serene Birendra Glacial Lake. Here, you will experience the true might of Mt. Manaslu. After that, you will come back to Samagaun to spend your night.
This incorporates the ‘Climb High, Sleep Low’ principle in your trek as going high and coming back down allows your body to adapt to the higher altitude while also giving it time to rest. It is important to prevent altitude sickness.
Time to get back on the trail as you move from Samagaun to Samdo. The day will begin with a gentle climb through the juniper forests, and you will cross lots of yak pastures. Walk on narrow trails surrounded by barren hills and descend. After crossing a bridge and following an uphill steep route, you will reach the top of the valley where lies Samdo.
As the trail is open, you can see stunning mountain views while trekking. Samdo is close to the Tibetan border, and it used to be a hub for Tibetan salt trade. Being close to Tibet, you will see that the village retains a strong trans-Himalayan cultural identity.
From Samdo, you move towards the last settlement before the challenging Larkya La Pass, which is the Larke Phedi, also known as Dharamsala. At first, the trail descends passing fields and mani walls to the edge of the village. After that, you will cross a wooden bridge and follow the Athahra Saya River. Soon enough, the trail goes alongside the Larke River. You will also see the Larkya Glacier on the way. After a while of trekking, the trail enters the Salkha Khola Valley and ascends to Larke Phedi. This high camp is where the air grows thin, and the anticipation thickens as the pass crossing becomes more real and closer.
You will stay overnight at Larke Phedi. Be sure to rest early for the pre-dawn crossing tomorrow.
This is the hardest and the most rewarding day of the trek that you have been looking forward to. We start early before dawn on this day to cross the Larkya La Pass before the weather makes it difficult for us. The trek begins by crossing a moraine and descending to a small lake. From here on, be careful as the terrain is uneven and rocky. You will cross the south steep grass slope and trek towards the edge of the moraine.
From here, follow a downhill route to four frozen lakes. Now, a final stretch of ascend will take you to the top of the Larkya La Pass. Yes, the climb is quite challenging and will test you physically. But the experience is equally rewarding. At the Larkya La Pass (5,160 meters), you will be greeted with a stunning 360-degree Himalayan panorama of mountains like Annapurna II, Himlung, Kang Guru, Manalsu, Cheo Himal, and many others. Spend some time and bask in the feeling as this is the pinnacle of your Manaslu Upper Route Trek. Once you are done with the experience and taking pictures, you descend following an uneven and steep trail.
After a while of hiking downwards, you will reach the beautiful alpine meadow of Bhimthang. The shift in the landscape is quite noticeable. Rest at Bhimthang after a long and rewarding day.
Leaving Bhimthang, you start your descent through yak pastures and pine and rhododendron forests. You will also walk alongside rivers and come across many waterfalls and spectacular views of Mt. Manaslu and Annapurna range on this day.
After a while on the trek, the Dudh Khola comes into view. Cross a bridge over it and trek further through lush forests to reach Gho, where you will spend the night. The trek is easy on this day due to the warmer climate and oxygen rich air.
Altitude: 2
This day features the final trekking stretch from Gho to Dharapani. The trail continues through lush forests and passes by many small villages. Bask in the remote landscape and memorize the mountain views as you will be going back to your busy life after this.
The trek ends at Dharapani where road access resumes and you join the Annapurna Circuit. From here, you will take a jeep ride to Besisahar. Change the vehicle at Besisahar and continue the ride to Kathmandu or Pokhara, as per your further plans.

Essential Information
Tips for a Successful Trek:
The Manaslu Upper Route trek is an off-the-beaten path trekking route in Nepal. This means that you will have an authentic trekking experience in Nepal. At the same time, you will experience some challenges given the remote nature of the trek.
Below are a few tips to make your Manaslu Upper Route trek successful and comfortable:
- Don’t expect developed lodge facilities. The villages of Kashigaun and Kerauja often offer simpler, community-run homestays and teahouses without elaborate amenities.
- The menu is very limited to local staples as you will be eating in the family kitchen. So, don’t expect elaborate menus.
- Use trekking poles from Day 1 to save your knees for the Pass as the upper route involves steeper start.
- Acclimatize well during your stop in Samagaon and go up to the Manaslu Base Camp no matter how tired you are feeling. This is important to prevent altitude sickness.
- Never hide your symptoms. A mild headache is common, but if it doesn't go away with rest and water, or if you lose your appetite completely, tell your guide.
Manaslu Circuit Upper Route - 17 Days FAQs
Expand AllYes, the Manaslu Circuit Upper Route is suitable for beginners with good stamina, basic physical fitness, and a positive mental attitude. It might be tough because of multi-day walking at high altitudes.
But if you prepare yourself for at least 3 to 6 months before the trek, you will be able to manage with rest and recovery at night. The key is to acclimatize well, maintain a steady pace, and trek with experienced guides who can help you through the challenge.
The standard Manaslu Circuit Trek features teahouses with amenities like electricity and Wi-Fi upto Samdo. In other high altitude areas and the Upper Route before joining the standard trek, electricity is usually available in teahouses.
However, the availability of Wi-Fi may be uncertain as this trek goes through a remote route where a strong signal might not be available. Even if you get Wi-Fi, the speed will be slow as many people will be connecting to the same network.
Yes, there are teahouses available on the villages of the Manaslu Upper Route trek before joining the standard trail. However, expect simpler facilities before Jagat like a warm and comfortable bed and nourishing home cooked meal with a shared bathroom and sometimes even shared rooms.
The standard Manaslu Circuit itself is considered to be significantly less crowded than other popular treks in Nepal. The Manaslu Upper Route trek is even less crowded than the standard route. This is because the upper route is underrated and remote, leading to many people picking the standard trail instead. This gives you 3 to 4 days of peaceful exploration of remote Manaslu Upper Route before joining the standard trail.
