Pikey peak trekking is located off the beaten path and lower Everest region, east of the Kathmandu valley. This trek offers a rare combination of panoramic mountain scenery, authentic Sherpa culture, Thopten Thupten Choling Gompa (Monastery), flora and fauna, and peaceful trails far from the crowds of Everest Base Camp.

From the summit of Pikey Peak (4,065m), you will witness one of the most impressive Himalayan panoramas in Nepal, including Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Gaurishankar, Rolwaling Himal, Langtang Himal, Ganesh Himal, Manaslu himal and Annapurna on a clear day. Even Sir Edmund Hillary once claimed that Pikey Peak offers his favorite view of Everest. And it is one of the few viewpoints in Nepal from where you can see both Mount Everest and Annapurna from one place.

What makes this trek special is not just the view, but the journey itself. You walk through traditional Sherpa villages, ancient monasteries, rhododendron forests, and quiet ridgelines where you rarely encounter large groups of trekkers. It is an ideal choice for beginners, families, or anyone looking for a short yet rewarding Himalayan experience.

The trek begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Dhap, the main starting point of the trek. From Dhap, the trail gradually climbs through small Sherpa settlements, pine forests, terraced fields, and grazing lands. Along the way, you will pass through villages such as Jhapre, Loding, Junbesi, and Phaplu, where you can experience local hospitality and traditional mountain culture.

The highlight of the trek is reaching the summit of Pikey Peak at 4,065 meters. From the top, you can enjoy one of the widest Himalayan panoramas in Nepal. On a clear day, you can see Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, Kanchenjunga, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Numbur Himal, and many other peaks stretching across the horizon.

One of the main reasons why travelers choose the Pikey Peak Trek is that it is less crowded than the Everest Base Camp Trek and does not require a domestic flight to Lukla. This makes it more budget-friendly, easier to plan, and less affected by flight delays.

The Trekkers have a chance to experience Tibetan Buddhist practice in the Pikey Peak Trek. the village of Junbesi is another attraction for Sherpa culture and nearby, the village is very famous for the Thupten Choling Monastery

About Thupten Choling Monastery

Thupten Choling Gompa is one of the most important Buddhist monasteries in the lower Everest region and a peaceful spiritual center surrounded by beautiful Himalayan landscapes. The monastery was established by Tibetan refugees led by the respected meditation master Trulsik Rinpoche after leaving Tibet in the 1960s. Today, it is home to hundreds of monks and nuns who continue to practice Tibetan Buddhism and preserve ancient spiritual traditions. Visitors can experience colorful prayer flags, chanting ceremonies, spinning prayer wheels, and traditional Sherpa culture during their visit. The peaceful atmosphere of the monastery offers a deep sense of spirituality and Himalayan heritage. Its remote location above Junbesi village makes the journey both culturally enriching and naturally beautiful. Thupten Choling Gompa is not only a religious site but also an important symbol of Tibetan Buddhist history and resilience in Nepal. Many trekkers visiting the Pikey Peak region consider this monastery one of the cultural highlights of their trek.

At Thupten Choling Gompa, monks and nuns spend their daily lives practicing Tibetan Buddhist teachings, meditation, prayer chanting, and traditional spiritual rituals. Many young monks also study Buddhist philosophy, sacred texts, and monastery education under senior teachers and Rinpoches. The monastery follows the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, one of the oldest Buddhist schools in Tibet. Visitors can often hear the peaceful sound of horns, drums, and prayers echoing through the hills during morning and evening ceremonies.

Pikey Peak Trek

Why Choose Pikey Peak Trek?

If you are planning a short yet highly rewarding trek in Nepal with your family, children, friends, or even as a solo traveler, the Pikey Peak Trek is an excellent choice. This beautiful Himalayan journey offers breathtaking panoramic views of Mount Everest and the surrounding snowcapped peaks from the summit of Pikey Peak, while leading you through peaceful Sherpa villages, scenic forests, and authentic mountain landscapes. With its moderate difficulty and shorter duration, the trek is perfect for travelers seeking a memorable Everest experience away from the crowded trails.

The trek is also flexible and less crowded than popular routes such as Everest Base Camp, Gokyo Lakes, or Annapurna Base Camp. Whether you have 5 days or a full week, the itinerary can be adjusted to match your time and comfort level. It is one of the few treks in Nepal where you can enjoy views of Everest without flying to Lukla.

How to Reach Pikey Peak

The journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Dhap or Jiri, which serves as the starting point of the trek. The road journey itself is an experience, passing through hills, rivers, and traditional villages. This road access makes the Pikey Peak Trek more reliable compared to Lukla flights, which are often delayed or canceled due to weather conditions.

The trail typically starts from Dhap and passes through villages such as Jhapre, Pikey Base Camp, and Junbesi. Each village offers a glimpse into Sherpa culture, monasteries, and traditional lifestyles. The highlight is the early morning hike to Pikey Peak summit, where you witness a breathtaking sunrise over the Himalayas.

Pikey Peak Trek Difficulty

The Pikey Peak Trek is considered an easy-to-moderate trek, making it suitable for beginners with a basic level of fitness. The trails are not technically difficult, and the altitude gain is gradual, which reduces the risk of altitude sickness.  It is suitable for beginners and first-time trekkers who have a reasonable level of fitness.

The itinerary is designed with gradual elevation gain to help with acclimatization. You will typically walk 5-7 hours per day on well-defined trails. While there are some uphill sections, especially before reaching the summit, they are manageable with a steady pace.

Essential Information

Best Time for Pikey Peak Trek

The best seasons for the Pikey Peak Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November).

Spring is one of the most beautiful times to do this trek because the rhododendron forests are in full bloom, temperatures are pleasant, and the skies are generally clear. Autumn is also very popular due to stable weather, excellent mountain views, and comfortable trekking conditions.

Winter treks from December to February are possible, but temperatures can be cold, especially at higher elevations. However, winter often offers very clear skies and fewer trekkers. The monsoon season from June to August is less recommended because of rain, muddy trails, and reduced mountain visibility.

Accommodation in Pikey Peak Trek

Accommodation during the Pikey Peak Trek is in local tea houses and mountain lodges. Rooms are generally simple but comfortable, usually with twin beds, blankets, and shared bathrooms. In lower villages like Dhap and Junbesi, tea houses are more comfortable and may offer attached bathrooms and hot showers. At higher elevations near Pikey Base Camp, accommodation is more basic.

Tea houses provide a warm and friendly atmosphere where trekkers can enjoy meals, relax near the stove, and meet local people.

Food in Pikey Peak Trek

You will find a variety of meals available during the trek. Most tea houses serve traditional Nepali food Dal bhat as well as common trekking meals. Popular meal options include dal bhat, fried rice, noodles, pasta, potatoes, soup, eggs, bread, pancakes, porridge, tea, coffee, and seasonal vegetables.

Dal bhat is the most popular trekking meal because it is filling, nutritious, and often comes with free refills.

Transportation

This trek begins and ends with a scenic drive between Kathmandu and Dhap/Phaplu. The drive offers beautiful views of hills, rivers, local villages, and terraced farmland. Depending on road conditions, the drive can take around 8 to 10 hours.

Private jeep transport can also be arranged for travelers who want a more comfortable journey.

Most teahouses provide WiFi services for an extra charge, but the connection can be slow in remote areas. Mobile network coverage from NTC and Ncell is available in several parts of the trail, with NTC usually offering better coverage.
