Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek Overview

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is one of the most remote and rewarding treks located in the eastern part of Nepal, bordering Sikkim of India. This trek will take you through both North and South Base Camps of the world's third-highest mountain, Mt Kanchenjunga(8,586meters). Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is a challenging but scenic circuit trail, crossing through high passes of Sele La and Sinon La to Pangpema (North Base Camp - 5,143m) and Oktang (South Base Camp - 4,730m)

Unlike the busy trekking routes of the Everest Base Camp area, the Kanchenjunga region remains wild, authentic, and largely untouched by modern development. Trekkers follow remote trails through deep river valleys, rhododendron forests, traditional mountain villages, and dramatic alpine landscapes. From terraced farmfields of Taplegunj to lush forests of rhododendron, chestnut, and oak, and up into Nepal's majestic Himalayan range, you will experience Nepal's most stunning scenery.

The trek takes you to both Pangpema (North Base Camp - 5,143 m) and Oktang (South Base Camp - 4,730 m), crossing the scenic Sele La Pass along the way. Throughout the journey trekkers enjoy spectacular views of Mount Kanchenjunga and other eastern Himalayan peaks, including Makalu and several impressive summits along the Nepal-Sikkim border.

The trek also offers an experience of the unique and rich culture of the ethnic Rai, Limbu, and Sherpa communities, almost untouched by the modern world. The diverse and fascinating landscape passes through a conservation area of a wide variety of flora and fauna, river valleys, waterfalls, and high passes.

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is not just a trek - it is a journey into one of the last truly wild corners of the Himalaya.

Mountains seen during the Kanchenjunga trek

As you reach a higher altitude, the scenery is dominated by a long range of mountain vistas. In the Kanchenjunga range, you can see various high mountains above 8000m, such as, Mt.Lhoste(8516m), Mt.Makalu(8481m), and Mt. Kanchenjunga (8586m). On this trek, you will reach Oktang South Base Camp and Pang Pema North Base Camp. You cross the two high passes, the Lapsang La Pass and the Sinon La Pass, locally known as Sele Le Pass. The Kanchenjunga is a long and adventurous trek that requires prior experience of trekking and good physical condition. The best seasons to visit for the Kanchenjunga trek are autumn and spring, when the weather is clear and you can enjoy clear views of the mountains and the natural scenery.

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek

Kanchenjunga Trek compared to the Everest Base Camp Trek?

The Everest Base Camp Trek is an undeniably more popular trekking route in Nepal. Kanchenjunga Trek offers a more remote, off-the-beaten-path experience for trekkers who are looking more raw adventure through real local Nepali villages and seeking more solitude. Unlike crowded trails of Everest, the Kanchenjunga Trek is more peaceful and much less commercialized.  While every adventurer/trekker has heard of the name Everest, among them, there are very few who have heard of the name Kanchenjunga, while being the third-tallest mountain in the world. The scenery along the trek is mesmerizing with spectacular views of Mt Kanchenjunga. The area is very much remote compared to the high-demand Everest area. Teahouses are basic, run by local families, which tells you Kanchenjunga Trek is ideal for seasoned trekkers looking for more challenging and wilderness-style trekking with fewer tourists and more nature.

Kanchenjunga and Everest Base Camp trek. Both treks are really beautiful and have their own perks, but if you are looking to experience the Nepal Himalaya in its purest form, then Kanchenjunga is the hidden gem waiting to be explored.

If you are attracted to this type of trekking, then Nepal offers several other off-the-beaten-path adventures that you might like:✔ Manaslu Circuit Trek, ✔ Langtang Valley Trek, ✔ Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek, ✔ Tsum Valley Trek, ✔Ruby Valley Trek, ✔ Phoksundo Lake trek ✔ Upper Dolpo Trek, and many more.

Kanchenjunga Trek Permits

The Kanchenjunga region lies inside the protected Kanchenjunga Conservation Area and is also classified as a restricted trekking region. Trekkers must obtain the following permits:

  • Kanchenjunga Restricted Area Permit
  • Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit (KCAP)

A minimum of two trekkers is required for this restricted region trek, and it must be organized through a registered trekking agency like us (Beyond the Limits Treks and Expedition).

Accommodation During the Trek

Accommodation during the Kanchenjunga trek is in local teahouses and lodges run by local families. Facilities are simple but comfortable, offering twin-sharing rooms and traditional Nepali meals. Because the region is very remote compared to treks like Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Base Camp, the teahouses are basic but provide a warm and authentic trekking experience.

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek - 21 Days FAQs

Expand All

Kanchenjunga Trek is considered a strenuous journey in the Himalayas. The trail includes steep ascents and descents, along with crossing several suspension bridges and several days of high-altitude trekking. Many parts of the trail are steep, rugged, and rocky. Therefore, you must have good physical fitness, good health, and mental health to do the Kanchenjunga Trek. For determined trekkers, proper acclimatization and a professional guide will make this trek doable.

No, solo trekking is not allowed in the Kanchenjunga region, due to it being a restricted region of the country requiring you to have at least two trekkers and one licensed guide to guide you along this remote trail. You must trek with a Nepal government-licensed trekking company, which is implemented for your own safety.

The best seasons for trekking in Nepal are Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to December). During these months weather is stable, the skies are clear, and the trail condition is very good with spectacular mountain views. The spring season brings you beautiful trails with flowers blooming everywhere, mostly rhododendron flowers, while the Autumn season gives you vibrant cultural festivals of local people along the trail and harvest seasons, which you can witness.

For this trek, trekking in winter and monsoon is not recommended, beacuse of less chance of success rate.

Kanchenjunga  Trek is a tea house trek Nowadays but the accommodation and food are very basic. Mostly you will get "Dalbhat" Nepali meals and potato noodles. day by day this area is developing which means more options are available.

You will get food served as per the menu of the tea house. You will find Nepali, Indian, and Tibetan cuisines. Besides that, you can also buy bars and snack items on the trail. Do carry a reusable water bottle with yourself and refill it every time it gets empty.

Yes Kanchenjunga region is one of the restricted regions of Nepal, so you will need;

  • Kanchenjunga Restricted Area Permit (the cost is US$20 per week for the first 4 weeks, and each additional week costs US$25 per person per week)
  • Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit (foreign national NPR 2000/US$16, SAARC nationals NPR500/US$4)

Additionally, you must trek with a Nepal government-registered trekking agency(like us) and be in a group of at least two foreigners, meaning solo travelling is not allowed in this region for any foreigners.

It used to be a camping trek; however, teahouses have been built in all places that used to be camping sites, making it a teahouse trek. Teahouses are basic in this region and are available along all the parts which we have mentioned in our itinerary. For the teahouse trek, we can just follow our itinerary. If you want to do camping trekking also, then we organize both mixed lodge + camping treks and fully supported camping trekking, based on your preference.

One of the best things about trekking with Beyond the Limits Treks is that you can customize your itinerary to suit your preferences, time availability & price. By customizing your trek, you can also adjust your expenses to fit your budget.
