Poon Hill Trek Overview

The 2-day Poon Hill Trek is one of the best short treks in Nepal for travelers who want to experience the beauty of the Himalayas in a limited time. This short Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek offers breathtaking sunrise views over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, traditional Gurung and Magar villages, rhododendron forests, and a rewarding Himalayan trekking experience without requiring long trekking days. Travelers who are worried about their fitness level, rest assured, this trek is ideal for all ages and fitness levels.

Located in the Annapurna region of Nepal, the Poon Hill Trek has become one of the most popular short trekking routes for beginners, families, couples, solo travelers, and anyone looking for an easy Himalayan adventure from Pokhara. Thanks to road access to Ulleri and Banthanti, it is now possible to complete the trek comfortably in just two days while still enjoying the highlight of the region - the famous sunrise from Poon Hill (3,210m). Many locals, as well as tourists, say this is one of the best sunrise treks in Nepal.

The Poon Hill viewpoint is considered one of the best panoramic viewpoints in Nepal. During sunrise, the golden light slowly illuminates some of the most iconic Himalayan peaks, including Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Hiunchuli, and many more. Watching the sunrise over the snow-covered mountains from Poon Hill is an unforgettable experience and one of the main reasons trekkers choose this route.

This 2-day Poon Hill Trek is ideal for travelers who do not have enough time for longer treks like the Annapurna Base Camp Trek or Annapurna Circuit Trek but still want to experience authentic trekking in Nepal. The route combines short trekking days with scenic jeep drives, making it suitable even for first-time trekkers.

At Beyond the Limits Treks & Expedition, we have been organizing treks in the Annapurna region since 2000. Our guides know the trails, weather conditions, tea houses, and local culture deeply, allowing us to provide a smooth, safe, and enjoyable trekking experience. Whether you are looking for a private trek, family-friendly adventure, or customized itinerary, we can tailor the trip according to your preferences.

This trek is customized so that you can experience one of the best Himalayan views of Nepal from one of the best trekking destinations in just one night and two days, starting from Pokhara. With the flexibility to complete the trek in just 2 days, this trek is perfect for those who have very little time in Nepal. If you like to do a longer adventure, some side trips like Ghandruk, Khopra Danda, or Mardi Himal could be added to enhance your experience or you can do an extended 4- days Poon Hill trek.

Who Is This 2-Day Poon Hill Trek Best For?

This short Poon Hill trek is for travelers who want Himalayan mountain views without committing to a long expedition. It is especially suitable for families, beginners, older travelers, couples, photographers, and visitors with limited time in Nepal. Since jeep access reduces the walking duration significantly, the trek is also a good option for travelers who are unsure about their trekking fitness.

Why Choose the Poon Hill Trek 2 Days?

The Poon Hill Trek 2 Days is perfect for travelers who want to experience the Himalayas without committing to a long and physically demanding trek. Nepal is famous for long trekking adventures such as Everest Base Camp and the Annapurna Circuit, but not everyone has two or three weeks available for trekking.

This short trek provides an excellent alternative. In just two days, trekkers can experience mountain villages, forests, Himalayan landscapes, and one of Nepal’s most famous sunrise viewpoints.

The development of road access in the Annapurna region has also made this itinerary possible. Previously, trekkers needed four or five days to complete the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek. Today, jeep access to Banthanti significantly reduces trekking duration while still preserving the main experience.

This trek is especially suitable for Travelers with limited time in Nepal, Families with children, Beginner trekkers, Older travelers looking for an easier trek, Photographers seeking mountain sunrise views, Travelers combining trekking with Nepal tours, and visitors wanting a short trek from Pokhara. Despite being shorter, the trek still offers impressive views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, traditional Gurung and Magar villages, rhododendron forests, and the famous sunrise from Poon Hill.

At Beyond the Limits Treks, we have been operating treks in the Annapurna region since 2000. Over the years, we have carefully adapted this itinerary based on changing road access, trekking conditions, and traveler preferences to create a comfortable and enjoyable short trekking experience.

2-Day Poon Hill Trek vs Regular Poon Hill Trek

Many travelers wonder whether to choose the short 2-day Poon Hill Trek or the classic 4 to 5-day version. The main difference is the amount of walking and how much of the lower trail is skipped by vehicle access.

The traditional itinerary includes longer walking days through villages such as Birethati, Tikhedhunga, and Ulleri, while the 2-day version uses jeep transportation to shorten the trekking duration. This makes the trek easier and more comfortable for travelers with limited time or moderate fitness.

Although the trekking duration is shorter, the main highlight of the trek, the sunrise view from Poon Hill, remains the same. You still experience beautiful mountain scenery, local villages, forests, and tea houses while reducing the overall trekking time.

For travelers seeking a quick Himalayan experience from Pokhara, the 2-day itinerary is often the most practical option.

Poon Hill Trek Difficulty

The Poon Hill Trek 2 Days is considered an easy-to-moderate trek in Nepal. It is suitable for beginners, families, and trekkers with average fitness levels. The trail mainly consists of stone staircases, forest trails, and gradual uphill sections. Since the trek is completed within two days, the walking hours are relatively manageable.

One of the most physically demanding sections is the staircase climb around Ulleri and the uphill hike toward Ghorepani. However, the pace can be adjusted according to the trekkers. No previous trekking experience is required for this trek. Anyone with basic fitness and the ability to walk several hours a day can complete it comfortably.

The highest point of the trek is Poon Hill at 3,210 meters, which is relatively low compared to high-altitude treks in Nepal. Because of this, the risk of altitude sickness is very low.

Best Time for the 2-Day Poon Hill Trek

The best seasons for the Poon Hill Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These months usually offer clear mountain views, stable weather, and comfortable temperatures for trekking.

If you want to see Rhododendron flowers, a click on a very good landscape filled with a rhododendron flower forest in the spring season is the best time for you. If you want a very good visibility of the mountain, with almost no cloud and crisp skies, the autumn season is best for you.

Winter treks are also possible and can offer quieter trails and beautiful snowy landscapes, although mornings can become cold at higher elevations. During the monsoon season, trails may become wet and cloudy, which can affect mountain visibility.

Transportation for Poon Hill Trek

Transportation plays an important role in making this trek possible within two days. The trip starts with a drive from Pokhara to Banthanti. Depending on road conditions and group preference, transportation is a private jeep. Private jeeps are more comfortable and flexible, especially for families and private groups.

The road section after Nayapul is rough in some places, particularly during monsoon season. However, the drive offers beautiful countryside scenery and mountain landscapes. After completing the trek, you drive back to Pokhara the same day.

Poon Hill Trek - 2 Days Itinerary

Pokhara to Pokhara

Expand all

Start your day with an early morning drive from Pokhara to Gorepani. After having breakfast in Pokhara, we will leave around 7-8 AM for Ghorepani. It will take approximately 3 to 4 hours to reach Ghorepani. We will drive through terraced farms and scenic villages, which you will get to enjoy. The drive up to Birentahti, where the permits for the trek is checked are graveled so the drive will be easy. After crossing Birenthati, most of the roads are rugged, so be prepared for the road. This rugged road has a charm of its own, giving the true essence of the adventure, and you could witness great scenery and rivers along the road, making the drive scenic. You could see some tourists walking along the road who start from down below.

After reaching Banthati, we will have lunch there and take some time to rest from the rugged road drive and stretch our bodies. Then we will continue our journey to Ghorepani by jeep. It will take around 1 hour to reach Ghorepani, depending on how fast the jeep driving so it's just an approximation. We will drive through lush forests, cross rivers, and visit some beautiful villages like Nagethati along the way. The more we ascent more beautiful the scenery becomes. Our trail will be covered with beautiful rhododendron forests and pine trees. In spring, this trail gives one of the best charms. We will reach Ghorepani, and we will pass by the check post again, check our permits, and enter the village of Ghorepani.

Ghorepani village is beautiful, offering us the beautiful scenery of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna range. After seeing these mountain views, many travelers say it's the best view they have ever seen, if it's their first time in Nepal. We will check in at our hotel to be fresh and in the evening be ready for dinner around 6:30 PM. Our guide will brief you on the time you have to wake up tomorrow morning for Poon Hill Sunrise.

We will wake up early in the morning for a sunrise view from Poon Hill. We will ascend around 400 meters up for mesmerizing views of the Himalayan range from Poon Hill. The wake-up time could be different throughout the year as the sunrise time changes. We will wake up as the time is set in the dinner and be fresh and start our ascend to Poon Hill.

The trail to Poon Hill is mostly made of stone steps and it takes around 45 mins to reach there, however, it's not that challenging so you can take it easy. Along the way, we need to buy a ticket to enter Poon Hill which we will do and continue our ascend. Along the ascend your view will keep getting better and better. Annapurna South would look like the hand of a god himself as you keep on ascending. After reaching the viewpoint Poon Hill you could witness one of the best views of the Himalayan range that Nepal has to offer. A 360-degree view with 180 degrees filled with the Himalayan range makes this viewpoint one of the best view points in Nepal.

The mountains you will see from this point, going from right to left, are: Baudha Himal, Himalchuli, Himalchuli North, Ngadi Chuli, Lamjung West, Annapurna IV, Mardi Himal, Machhapurche (Fishtail), Annapurna III, Hiunchuli, Annapurna South, Annapurna Fang, Nilgiri East, North and South, Tsartse, Tashi Kang, Tashi Kang III, Dhampus Peak, Tukuche, Dhaulagiri, Dhaulagiri II, III, IV, and VI, Gurja, and finally Ghustang North and South. Moreover, you could see two other hills, unknown for their beautiful scenery, Muldai View Point and Khopra Danda View Point. These two are less commercialized trek in Nepal which also offers great views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri range.

After watching this stunning sunrise overseeing the beautiful mountain range we will descend down to Ghorepani for morning breakfast. After having breakfast, we will descend the same way we came up to via Banthati and drive out to Pokhara. We will make a small stop in Birenthati for Lunch and after having lunch, we will continue our journey to Pokhara. After dropping you in your Hotel this small trek of ours will be complete.

Along the way to Pokhara, there is a bungee jumping place in Kusma (the world's second highest bungee jumping) if you like to do bungee, then we could take a little detour and bungee jump and drive back to Pokhara.

Essential Information

We began offering this 2-day Poon Hill Trek in 2020 after the road passed Ulleri. Early that year, many tourists still didn't know about the road and transportation updates, as many travel websites weren't caught up. So, at first, we felt hesitant to promote this Jeep option, and it felt like a less adventurous trek, compromising a real trekking spirit.

When our experienced guides led trekkers in the original route, it became clear that walking alongside the passing jeep gave a disruptive feel for true hikers. That was when we realized this trek was not ideal for those chasing remote adventure but it is for people who are seeking short, scenic, and non-strenuous Mountain experiences.

Since then, we have organized many trips to Poon Hill with this itinerary, and trekkers with just 2-3 days have truly enjoyed this. This trek is perfect for families, couples, and travelers who are searching of panoramic Himalayan views and authentic village life without hard elevation gains .The feedback has been fantastic, everyone appreciates the flexibility, comfort, and ease of access this trek now offers.

Accommodation During the Trek

Accommodation during the trek is provided in local tea houses and mountain lodges. Becasue poon hill trek is very popular the teahouses here is very good compared to other trekking areas, so you will find from basic accommodation to standard rooms with attached bathrooms and nice beds. Most tea houses along the Poon Hill route also offer dining halls, hot meals, charging facilities, and Wi-Fi services. Since this is one of the most popular trekking routes in Nepal, the accommodation standard is generally better developed compared to remote trekking regions.
