Annapurna Base Camp Trek is one of the most flexible treks in Nepal, having various starting points, ending points, and most of the places/teahouses along the trek are very good for overnight stay so you can adjust your itinerary based on your fitness level, available time or the number of days you want to spend in the Himalayas. Unlike other Himalayan treks that follow a fixed route you can customize this trek completely, add more or remove some, everything can be tailored based on your preferred style of travel.
One of the best things about this trek is that there is no one fixed itinerary. Some trekkers prefer a short and fast itinerary, while others choose a slower and more comfortable route with acclimatization days and side trips like Poon Hill. You can also upgrade your trek based on your budget like private jeep pickup and drop-off itineraries, luxury-style trekking like Helicopter return, and routes that focus more on culture and villages like Ghandruk and Chhomrong rather than only reaching Annapurna Base Camp.
In our experience, we have come across many travelers who are confused about which itinerary would actually be best for them. So, in this guide, we have put some of the most common Annapurna Base Camp Trek itineraries and what makes it different than other ABC Trek itineraries. We hope this guide will give you the answer that you are looking for, an idea of which itinerary would be best for you.
How many Days do you need for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?
The Annapurna Base Camp Trek can be completed in as little as 5 days or extended to 12 days or more, depending on the route and pace. Most trekkers choose 6 to 9 Days, which provides a comfortable balance between walking hours, acclimatization, and enjoying the experience.
You might also find trekkers who have completed this trek in 4 days, but for a better experience and acclimatization, we do not recommend doing this trek in less than 5 days. The short itinerary is for trekkers who are very fit and have limited time, and as the days increase, it becomes more balanced with better acclimatization and some side trips like Poon Hill.
Which Annapurna Base Camp Trek itinerary is the Best?
There is no single itinerary that will be best for everyone. The right itinerary depends on your trekking style and available time. Before choosing an itinerary, you have to ask yourself why you are going to the Annapurna Base Camp Trek: is it for the view, a challenge, culture, or an experience? Based on all, you can choose your itinerary, knowing why you are going to Annapurna Base Camp, what you want to see or experience, and what number of days and route will have the highest chance to provide you with what you are expecting.
If you have limited time and good fitness, the 5 to 7-day itineraries are ideal. If you want a more relaxed experience, the 8 to 10-day itineraries are better. If you want sunrise views from Poon Hill and a more complete Annapurna experience, choose the 8 or 12-day route. Beginners usually enjoy the 8 to 10-day itineraries more because the pace is less rushed. Photographers and nature lovers often prefer longer itineraries during spring and autumn.

Which Annapurna Base Camp itinerary do you recommend?
Beyond the Limits Treks has been operating this trek since 2000, and is very experienced. For trekkers who are interested in doing this trek, we generally recommend the 7 and 8-day itinerary with limited time and the 10-day itinerary for those seeking a more relaxed and enjoyable experience. Both options provide excellent mountain views and a rewarding trekking experience while allowing enough time to enjoy the highlights of the Annapurna region.
What Is the Hardest Part of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?
The most physically demanding section for many trekkers is the long stone staircases between Chhomrong and Sinuwa. The climb toward Deurali can also feel tiring due to the increasing altitude and colder temperatures. Many trekkers say this is not a beginner trek because it includes a lot of stairs and up and down, so please be prepared for that.
The trek itself does not require technical climbing skills, but good fitness and preparation are important, especially for shorter itineraries with longer walking days.
Accommodation During the Trek
The Annapurna Base Camp Trek has well-established tea houses throughout the route. Most villages offer basic but comfortable accommodation with twin-sharing rooms, common dining halls, charging facilities, WiFi, and hot showers.
As altitude increases, accommodation becomes more basic. During peak trekking seasons, it is recommended to book early or trek with a local company that arranges accommodation in advance.
Best Time for Annapurna Base Camp Trek
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are considered the best seasons for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek.
Spring offers rhododendron forests, greenery, and warmer temperatures, while autumn provides stable weather and excellent mountain visibility. If you have included the Poon Hill trek in the itinerary, the spring season will be the highlight of the trek. Ghorepani Poon Hill is covered with Rhododendron flowers, so the flowers and the view of red flowers blooming covering the whole hill is something to look forward to in this season.
As for the autumn seasons, the skies are very clear, if you want to see the mountains in the clearest sky, autumn is the best time for it. Autumn is considered the best time to visit Nepal to experience the mountains.
Winter treks are also possible with fewer crowds, although temperatures at Annapurna Base Camp can drop significantly during the night.
